• About 200 species
• Sporophytic plant body consists of slender creeping rhizhomes, which give rise to aerial branches with numerous small leaves and dichotomously branched roots.
Stem: delicate, slender dichotomously branched.
• Erect(L.selago),pendant(L.phlegmaria) or prostrate with aerial erect branches (L.clavatum)
Roots dichotomously branched
• Leaves: simple, sessile and microphyllous
• Mostly spirally arranged on the stem
• Fertile leaves are called sporophyll
